MAHAKIPAWA GOLDFIELDS
A STRIKE OF GOLD
(United PretH Association)
BLENHEIM, This Day
Following on a report that- the MahaUipawa Goldfields Company had struck a deep lead in the Cullensville Valley ( o:i Tuesday, a couple of local shareholders visited the claim yesterday. The company' has sunk a shaft and two bores and it is the last bore, situated about three chains from the road, which has given indications which aroused attention, though only' a five inch. On Tuesday a wash, brought up a considerable amount of coarse gold pieces and flakes weighing up to a pennyweight. This is regarded as indisputable evidence that the old original bed of the creek had been struck. The bore was down 135 feet. Yesterday the piping and casting w ere removed from the bore with a view to sinking further bores in an attempt to trace the course of the old creek bed, hut it is understood that the directors of the comnany who have been summoned from Christchurch, will be recommended to sink a shaft on the site of the successful bore. The company is working on the theory that the has been filled up in the course cf ages b-' silt brought down by' the stream, and that the original bed stream :s probably very rich in gold. This theory is home out by the test made by the drill.
