LONDON, April 8. Play at the opening session was only moderate owing to the extreme caution of the players. Newman was the quickest to accustom himself to the surroundings. Maconachy made a poor show at the first - session'. His best, break was 100 and he averaged twenty compared with Newman’s 37. Maconachy in the evening showed a remarkable revival of form, his breaks including 346, 124. Newman’s best was 237.
