SCHOONER'S CREW RESCUED

BY THE ARAWA

United Press Association)

WELLINGTON, This Day. The Arav/a brings details of the rescue of the crew of the Newfoundland schfionev Jean Dunronald Duff on October 15th. The schooner was en route from Glasgow to New Foundland coai Jaden, and had been for forty days buffeted bv gales and covered a distance equal to a three days’ steamer run. During this time the Atlantic was thrashed by gales that held up all kinds of shipping. The Duff's sails were blown away soon after clearing tl>o Irish coast, food and water supplies got low. and distress signals day after day failed to elicit response. When sighted on October 15th by the Arawa, the schooner was in a sinking condition and would not have lasted the night. A boat from the Arawa 1 took the master and eight men off the Duff, all much exhausted. Before leaving they fired the schooner and the Arawa wirelessed the fact to ships within reach. The captain was reluctant to leave his schooner as lie had been twenty-two years with the same owners. The crew landed at Colon.
