The life-history of the cattle-tick occurring in the North of the Dominion is lucidly do,At with in the current August issue, of the New Zealand Journal of Agriculture by Mr J. G. Myers, who is making a special investigation of the subject. A somewhat related veterinary contribution of special interest to dairyfarmers is that by Mr A. R. Young on red water in cows in New Zealand, a trouble which in this country is of dietetic origin, and riot to be confused with a more serious condition present in some other countries, bearing the same general name but having a quite different cause. A second article bv Mr L. D. Foster on the testing o? New Zealand grown wheats deals specially with the strength and quality of flour. Mr IT. C. Aston discusses the organic matter of the soil, showing the importance of humus in culture. A paper by Air \Y. D. Hunt on the breeding of farm animals gives an interesting and clear exposition of the laws of heredity, with a local bearing. Continuing their series on the relation of birds to agriculture, Messrs Myers and Atkinson deal with the insectivorous small birds in the Dominion. Notes no work done by boys’ and girls’ agricultural clubgs in the Taranaki and Wanganui districts last season are contributed by Mr J. W. Deem. Another of Mr G. If. Cunningham’s series on the fungus diseases of fruit-trees appears, the subject being black-rot., wTifcli affects tlie apple, pear, and quince. The regular seasonal notes, answers to inquiries, weather records, etc., complete the issue.
