OBITUARY A KIKIWA SETTLER Many pooplo will hear with regret t!ic death at the age of 50 of Mr Jonathan Porthouse, a resident of I lie -Nelson district for over 16 years. He was a native of the north of England and left there for New Zealand, eventually arriving in Nelson the home of his uncle, Mr Jonathan Brough, of Washington Valiev. Mr Porthouse had been ailing for many months, and undeiwent an operation at the Nelson public hospital, from which he did not recover. Mr Porthouse was for some time with the Survey Department, after which he went on tiie land in the Motupiko Valley, and at the time.of his death was a resident of Kikiwa. Mr Porthouse will be sadly missed in the neighbourhood for his many good qualities. He was a splendid character, and one and all with whom he had come in contact admired his straightforwardness, and the fact that before his he was the soul of social life, to winch he contributed in no small way by his violin playing and singing and universal good spirits. Mr Porthouse was a Boer War veteran, serving with the Home forces, and as a. mcbmer of the Legion of I 1 rontismen, was one of the right calibre. The funeral took place from the home of his brother-in-law, Mr Len Arnold, Korere, last Sunday afternoon, and was attended by friends from near and far, proceeding to a Motupiko Church, where a service was held, the interment taking place in the churchyard. There were many floral tributes', among them being a bunch of wall flowers, deceased’s favourite flower, which was placed on the coffin. Mr Porthouse leaves a widow and four children to mourn their great loss, and the greatest sympathy is expressed to them.
