ESCAPE OF INSANE CRIMINALS
SEVERAL RECAPTURED

NEW YORK, July 23,
According to a message from Chester, Illinois, armed posses recaptured all but eleven of the twenty-six insane criminals, many of whom are murderers, who escaped from Illinois criminal insane hospital. Two guards were slabbed and one maniac shot dead in a battle preceding the escape. Seventy-live inmates were in an open air cage for exercise when they attacked the guards and wrenched the bars apart with wooden benches. Other guards who rushed to the scene prevented wholesale escapes, hut twenty-six eluded pursuit overnight, causing a panic in the surrounding neighbourhood, all houses being barricaded.
