JERSEYS FOR SOUTH AFRICA AFRICA

NEW MARKET OPENING

Jersey’ cattle are practically a new breed in South Africa, and there is a possibility of an export trade in this breed with that country developing. An initial shipment is just going forward to Durban, and upon tho success of this consignment future business will very largely depend. Should a considerable export tx - ado bo developed, this will have a very considerable effect on prices within the Dominion. To-day tho Jersey breed practically ranks as the national dairy breed of the Dominion, and only the lack of an export trade has kept prices from soaring to very high levels. It is tho wonderful butterfat records being made by Jerseys that his attracted attention in South Africa. There are now about 20 Jerseys in New Zealand which have produced 700 lbs of butterfat in a year. Most of these were bred or owned in Taranaki. The champion cow of the Jcisey breed is Sultan’s Daisy 7, ownoil by Messrs E. O’Sullivan and Sons, of Taranaki. She produced 968 lbs of butterfat in her best year. Other ncted producers are Mr H. B. Lepper’s (Taranaki) Elf’s Beauty, 800 lbs of butterfat (second highest producing mature cow) ; Mr A. J. Smith’s (Taranaki), St. Lambert’s Belle, 780 lbs of butterfat (bred by Air John Hale and champion senior four-year-old of New Zealand); Airs A. Banka am! Sons (Alanawatu) Woodstock’s I ancy Free, 770 lbs of butterfat (champion junior four-year-old of New Zealand) ; Airs A. 'Banks and Sen’s Woodstock's Baby, 657.91 lbs of butterfat (champion senior three-year-old of New Zealand) ; Air W. J. Chynoweth’s (Waikato) Zinokin, 641 lbs of butterfat (champion junior three-year-old of New Zealand)’; Air John Hale’s (Taranaki) Lady Superior, 680 lbs of butterfat (champion senior two-year-old of New Zealand); Mr Jas. Nieollson’s (Taranaki) Aster’s August Child, 689 lbs of butterfat (champion junior two-year-old of New Zealand). In addition to the great Jerseys mentioned, one Taranaki herd, that of Air John Hale, has produced five females that have averaged 730 lbs of butterfat—a wonderful achievement. The one sire was responsible for four of these champions. This was the bull, S’oumise Tom, bred by Air Charles Goulter. of Hawkesbury. It will thus be apparent that the constructive breeding of Jersey’s lias reached a very high level in the Dominion.

One of the females 'being exported with the shipment to South Africa is sired by a son of the champion Jersey cow, Sultan’s Daisy, referred to above, while tlie dam of the hiefer which is named Afeadowvale Fairy Gold, produced 504 lbs of butterfat as a three-year-old. This heifer is in calf to a grandson of Sultan’s Daisy. Tlie second heifer, Aleadowvale Songbird, is out of a tested dam also, the record being 509 lbs of fat at two years of age. The latter heifer is a daughter also of the champion butterfat hull of tho Jersey* breed, Sunflower’s Perceus. Aleadowvale Songbird is in calf to tho son of Sultan’s Daisy in addition. The hull which completes tlie pioneer selection being forwarded < to South Africa is also sired by a son of the champion Sultan’s Daisy, while his dam is a full sister to Aleadowvale Songbird, which is included in the selection. Alessrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., who are shipping the cattle, state that all three nhimals were drawn from the noted Aleadowvale stud of Alessrs E. O’Sullivan and Sons, and from their breeding should do great credit to the Dominion. The only drawback is that the Journey, via Sydney, is a long and trying one. However, the constitution of the cattle is excellent, and they should ho landed in the best of oider, as elaborate preparations for the voyage have been made.
