The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated 24th iiist., from the High Comnussioner for New Zealand, London: Meat: New Zealand mutton meets very limited demand, market being chiefly for Australian and Argentine. Lamb market quiet. Chilled beef, lighter supplies. Frozen beef, small supply and quotations nominal. N.Z. Mutton: Under 64 lbs BLI to 9-jd; 64-721bs, to 7fd; over 72 lbs 6j«i to 7d; ewes, 6d to 6|d. N.Z. Lamb: Best quality Is (R-d; second claas lljd; North Island, ordinary, 11-id; second class 10-id. N.Z. Beef: Ox fores 3gd: ox hinds sd.
Butter: Market quiet and irregular during this week, but now showing improvement. N.Z. (salted), finest, 190 s to 190 s per cwt (Is B£-d to Is 9d per lb). Unsalted, 198 sto 200 s per cw; (Is 9id to Is 9-i-d per lb). Other qualities, 186 s to 188 s per owt (Is 8d to Is B£d per lb).
Cheese: Market quiet hut steady. N.Z., finest, coloured 148 s to 150 s per cwt (Is 3£d to Is 4d per lb) ; white 146 s to 148 s per cwt (Is 3-id to Is 3£d per lb). Other qualities 146 s per cwt. (Is 3id per lb); -white 144 sto 145 s per cwt (Is 3 ; ’d per lb). A shipment of New Zealand produce arrived last week by the s.s. Carpentaria.
Hemp: Manila market quiet and prices somewhat weaker. “H” grade spot sold at £37; “G” grade MarchMay shipments quoted at £37; “J” grade £35; New Zealand demand falling off except for inferior. It is reported that fair grade is offered in America at £3l 10s for March-May shipments.
Wool: Sale closed on 23rd instant. Attendance was good throughout. Home demand, which was indifferent at tho beginning, improved towards fcl*e close. Continental demand keen and showing increasing interest in crossbred. America bought suitable lets freely. Confidence steadily improved and better tone noticeable at the close. Merino and fine crossbred finished at par to 5 per cent lower than January rates. Coarse and medium crossbred, which earlier were 10 per cent lower, have recovered, closing medium crossbred about 74 per cen£ coarse crossbred s.per cent cheaper. Average closing values:—Superior 00./64’s (merino) nominally 2s to 2s 61; ordinary 60/64’s (merino) Is 6d to 2s; 56’s (super halfbred) Is 9d to 2s Id; 50’s (halfbred) Is 3d to Is 6d; 48’s (fine crossbred) Is Id to Is 3d; 44/46’s (medium crossbred) 11,d to Is 2d; 36/40’s (coarse crossbred) Bid to lOid. Next series commence 24th April. The B.A.W.R.A. sale at Liverpool on 19th April has been cancelled.
