TERRITORIAL AND SENIOR CADET NOTES

Advice has been received that the ! trophy presented by the Governor-Gen- ! era! of New Zealand in connection .with | the Imperial Challenge Shield competition has been awarded this year to the I Nelson College Cadets. This trophy was ! presented this vear for the unit (senior j cadet) entering the most infmber of teams and producing the highest averI age score. The College is to bo heartily [congratulated on this excellent result. As a unit the company entered 13 teams I with a total of 113 firers. The average i score worked out at 80.15 out of a pos--Isi hie 100. The College best team consisted of 12 men, who made an average j score of 95.25. " Each year a prize is awarded by"Dr ! Hanson, which is known as the 'William Robert Friar Memorial Prize. This prize is awarded" to the beat c; in the Southern command. This year the prize lias been awarded to Coy. Sergt.-Major E. G. H. Weeks, of the Nelson College Cadets. . Eacli vear a good deal of interest arises in tho Weekly Press .Challenge I bhield competition. These shields (there : is one for each island) were presented 1 y.v the Ohristchurch Press Co. Ltd. during the late Mr R. J.Seddon's regime as Prime Minister to encourage rifle shooting amongst senior cadets. A medal and riband is also given to each member of the winning team, together with a cash grant of £lO to the unit. The South Island shield is at present !in the possession of the Marlborough | College Cadets, but it may be said that there is considerable local activity this year, and it is rumoured that the shield will journey north m the near future. ■ . There are now three cadet companies to bo judged for the Riddiford Cup competition. This cup, which ;ia to be awarded for the first time this year, is to be given to the smartest and most I efficient cadet company m the Dominion. Nelson College is to represent-the Southern Command, Hamilton High School tho Northern command and Scots College (Wellington) the central comimand. The examining board, consisting .of three officers, will visit Nelson-on the 14th November for the purpose of inspecting the College Cadets'. Nelsons endeavours in sport and military training have been crowned .with success this vear and the College are wished the best 'of success by everyone m their endeavours to appropriate this cup.
