CRICKET

THE SEASON’S PROSPECTS

There is every indication that a prosperous season awaits cricket in this district tins season, and ,i fairly general start will be made with games everywhere; to-morrow. Owing to the heavy and extensive lopdressing carried out at the Park, it is impossible fit present to fix the date of commencement of matches on that ground, but enormous improvement wine* will undoubtedly result will be well worth f waiting for, ami probably iio player will chafe at the delay on that score: At the same time, the gradually extending lateness of the ‘football season imposes an unfair handicap on llig Summer sport, as It means the loss of it good portion of the early park, of the Season owing to the late date when it becomes possible commence work oil the ground. It is almost certain that the area near the senior wicket Will be in milch better order than has ever been the case before, and should materially assist ill making fielding what it should be —olio of the most. enjoyable .brandies of tile game. nith the English match coming, and the possibility that Nelson may again at some future .date become the holders of the Hawke Cup, this Improvement is all the more Welcome.

THE TEAMS Athletic will again be strong, and on present indications should have little difficulty in annexing the championship. Morgan and Guy have left Neison, and Saunders will, probably not he playing, but Fletcher will be available regularly, and Mitchell) from Rotorua; should toe at* acquisition to the hatting strength. Old BrtVfi will be' Weak. It was expected that ,T. Newman, who is now living in town, would he playing 'with the team, which would have strengthened them greatly and made the competition more interesting, tout he has been persuaded to tourney into ;> the country every Saturday and remain in the VVaimea competition. In addition to tins, the club has lost S. Miller, while Blamfres mav not see the season out. Ihe only addition is R. Fowler, who captained the College team t wo seasons ago. College, although not strong, will he very greatly strengthened by K. Saxon, who has returned frrom England , and will take the team in hand. His batting and fielding should also make for'better efforts on the part of the hoys ■themselves. It is not yet quite certain whether A. L. Rowe,' of Christchurch, who has also joined the College staff, will also plav in the school team. If it is decided to play only one master, Rowe v, ill become available for Old Boys, and, should be a decided help. The new club under the old name, United, has entered teams in all competitions. The personnel of the senior XI. is not yet known, but it is understood that several retired players will be assisting them to get a- start-. inc maioritv of the players are resident in ibe Toi Toi Valley locality, and the club will practice at Victory Square. The Richmond Club has seceded from the Nelson Association, and will tins year play in the Waimea competitions, but they have apparently dropped their junior team, some of whom may presumably go to Stoke. . , Stoke apparently wjj] be of much tl*s same strength with Gibhn, Langtoem, and-Thomason as the mainstays. Willi these available, they will always have to be reckoned with. (

IN’ THE COUNTRY This season competitions will be run by the Waimea, Tapawcra, Motueka, ami Tnkaka sub-associations, and there will he approximately fifty teams under the Nelson Association. . On the West Coast, too a revival is taking place, and application for re-affiliation to the N Z.0.0'. is to be made. If this takes place, it is likely that the, mate}.’ atNelson against the Englishmen will be made to include Nelson, Marlborough, Duller, and the West Coast. Fifteen years ago trophies * or . ®: tition locally were fairly numerous, but of recent vears practically none have been <nven. This season, howevei, shows a V revival, for in addition to Mr Tom Newman’s offer of a cup or shield for district competition trophies have already been given for thebest batimg and bowling averages mi the thud el (Trade and for the best fieldsman m int Su m-rep team, while another » available. but has not yet been allotted. Coote offered a trophy for the best fieldsman in the senior rep team. It was also announced that Mr Tom Newman has offered a valuable cup or shield for competition in the Nelson and Marlborough districts, possibly between the various association-, and in accepting the offer with thanks, it was decided to appoint a- sub-committee consisting of Messrs Griffin, Vercoe, and Neale to meet Mr Newman with a view to arranging, on what lines the competition will be conducted. , A letter was read ‘ from the Motueka Association expressing strong dissatisfaction with the management ’of cricket in the district and with the selection of rep. teams. After discussion, the opinion was expressed that the _ game might be benefited in the Bay districts, and that certainly the, Motueka Association would bo better satisfied if they secure:! direct affiliation with the New Zealand Cricket 1 Association, and it was decided to suggest that they apply , for affiliation, and if thev do' so. the Nelson Association will support the application. To assist the Association’s finances, it was decided .that all senior players (excluding College) pay a levy of Is per match for the season, on the lines of the ground fees in other centres. Correspondence was read from the New Zealand Cricket Council announcing the allotment of a match to Nelson against the .English team for 30th and 31st January next, and satisfaction was expressed at the result of the Association’s strong protest exclusion from the original.programme. Letters were also received from the Waimea Association as ’to larger -■ representation on the Nelson Association,’and it was decided to invite Waimea to send in four or five representatives to discuss the matter and make better arrangements.
