SPREAD TO SOUTH ISLAND MATTER OF A YEAR OR TWO (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 16 Addressing the Fruitgrowers’ Conferenco Dr Tillyard of the Cawthron Institute, stated that the position in regard to the blight was fairly hopeful. It was definitely established that it comd be controlled where hawthorn was eradicated. Except by a miracle tho disease could never be eradicated from New Zealand. It was only a-matter of a year or two before it would spread to the South Island. Last spring was most unfavourable to the disease, which could be expected to show up more vigorously and virulently when the spring happened to he favourable. Bees and migratory birds spread fire-blight, and tho Government should introduce stringent regulations to overcome the danger. -
