"STICK IT OUT”

advice to soldier settlers BY COMMISSIONER. OP CROWN LANDS At the monthly meeting of the Nelson Land Board Held on Oth inst. tho following statement concerning soldier settlers was made by the Commissioner (Mr H. D. McKellar) ‘T want to say a few words to those soldier settlers who are becoming disheartened owing to the poor returns they arc receiving from their farms. My"advice to them is to ‘stick it out.’ Their position is difficult, but they .have been in even more difficult positions while on active service apd have won through, and I feel sure that if they display the same spirit in their present difficulties they need have no fear regarding tho future. Prices of sheep, wool and butter-fat are'rising, and the--outlook generally is brighterthan it was a few months ago. lam confident that the man who, has sufficient tenacity of purpose to retain and work his property will become successfully established. The Lands and Survey "Department, as landlord or mortgagee, is willing to help the man who is trying to help himself. Instalment payments can he postponed and foreclosure is never considered in the case of a settler who is working his farm satisfactorily and who shows that he 1 is determined to succeed in spite of the obstacles that have to be surmounted. When a settler 1 cannot meet the whole of his payments he should pay what he can on account. This is necessary in order that money may be available for advances to develop unimproved properties held by other soldiers and purchase the necessary stock and implements. Every farm will ultimately he successfully worked by somebody and I sincerely hope that the men now in possession will retain their properties, survive the present time of adversity, and be rewarded bv success. Any settler who is thinking of abandoning his farm should, in order to avoid; cause for future regret, seek my advice before making a final decision.” The report was received.
