DIPHTHERIA IN CHRISTCHURCH
MINISTER’S REPLY.TO A SUGGESTION

CHRISTCHURCH, July 11
The Mayor has received a letter from tho *Hon. C. J. Parr in reply to a suggestion made by a recent deputation that a Commission of experts be appointed to investigate the cause of diphtheria. The Minister’s opinion is that the suggestion is at present not possible of fulfilment. He proposes to communicate with the Medical Research Council and the Rockefeller Foundation, and ascertain whether they purpose in the near future undertaking any research into causation of diphtheria, and offering to collaborate by supplying any information in hi-s power. In the meantime the Department has been instructed to give special attention to Christchurch and Suburbs, and endeavour by all possible means to ascertain the causes of tho present outbreak.
