The Nelson Evening Mail MONDAY, MARCH 21, 1921 A FINE SPIRIT

UNDOUBTEDLY the most pleasing feature of tlic band contest week is the behaviour ol' the Nelson crowds and the impartial manner in which they judged the various bands. There is hardly a Nelsonian who would not have been immensely pleased if cither of the local bands had won in their respective contests. As the Nelson men marched through the streets in company with the visitors there Avas a feeling they were of our own town, that they "belonged" to us, and that though not eminently successful they had played their part well. Tn according a fair meed of praise to the visitors there was no fickle overlooking of the local men. In no sense could it be «aid that familiarity had bred contempt. Some correspondents have paid tribute to the impartiality of the Nelson people, and this is high praise indeed. It is indeed a fine ( tiling that visitors can come into the town and be loudly acclaimed for their wins. The impartiality is to be highly prized. Nelson Avas out to see the best band Avin, and when this occurred if was pleased with the result. If this line spirit Could be made to permeate all local affairs, especially all local elections?, great benefits would result. It has been a happy avcolc. The local Committee, Avith the exception we mentioned on Friday, has done remarkably well, and our visitors left yesterday morning with feelings of appreciation for the kindness and friendliness extended to them. It is necessary to remember, however, thai- the contest could not have been the .success it has been if the Committee had not so efficiently carried out its duties.
