X WORTHY OBJECT
A public meeting in connection with the Barnardo Homes was held at the Council Chamber yesterday afternoon, the Mayor (Mr V.’. \V. Snodgrass) presiding. Apologies were received from Bishop Mules. Mr P. C. Hurst and Mrs C. R. Foil.
The Mayor explained the objects of the meeting, arising out of a letter lie had received from the Minister of Externa! Adairs, asking that- Nelson should do something towards helping the Barnardo Home Jubilee bazaar tr. be held in London, over which Princess Alice would preside. New Zealand was to have a stall, presided over by Lady Allen. During the war tin Homes had suffered seriously financially, and it was Imped that the resnh of the bazaar would hie that the deficit would be wiped off and the efficiency of the Horae not impaired. The Government had taken the matter up. and the Mayor said lie was sure all would agree with the necessity of*belli ing on such a worthy cause. It wn - for the mooring to say what mean, should be adopted to help the Home. In answer to a question, the Mayor stated that it was particularly asked that produce, and not money should be sent.
Mr 0. Milner, of Kirkpatrick and Co., said liis firm would be very glad to help in any way possible. At the present time there was a very keen demand at Home for New Zealand jama, and his firm was constantly receiving inquiries. At the present time, owing to the sugar shortage, the export of jam was prohibited, but he thought that in the circumstances this difficulty could be got over.
The Town Cleric (Mr Edmonds) consented to act as secretary and trear surer.
After a. short discussion as to the best means to obtain subscriptions, il was resolved to make a, direct appeal 'to the public through the jness and to place subscription lists in various parts of the town. It was also resolved to hold a flower day in the city; and to ask -Mr. E. Short to arrange for a concert. Air Surrell offered the free use of the. theatre for the latter. It was further decided to ask permission to place (collecting boxes in various hotels ; and to communicate with chairmen of various local bodies to have boxes placed in their districts. It was resolved to open an account at the National Bank. The ministers throughout the district arc to be asked to arrange tor retiring collections towards the fund. A sub-committee, consisting or Miss Tomlinson, Alcsdaraes Cooto, Milner, and the Alayor was appointed to wait on the Horticultural Society Committoe for their co-operation in running the flower day.
