CONCERT AT EMPIRE THEATRE.
A GRATIFYING SUCCESS. The concert gu cu in the Empire Theatre on Sunday evening m aid oi a distressed family was most- successful from every point ol view. There, was a crowded attendance, a splendid programme, and a record collection. As a matter cf fact, the concert vas the biggest financial sm-c.-ss of anv amateur effort cor field iJC.iily, anti the sum realised was just on £6O. Tim arrangements for the entertainment were in ’.lie capable hands.of Mr E. As the expenses will lie n 1, the whole of the proceeds will be available lor the relief of the family concerned. The programme was as follows:—Orchestral selection, Vitetta Bros.’ _Orchestra ; song, ‘How’s My Hoy.” Mr E .11. Short; scong (a) -wvia (Rubenstcin). <h) “The First Violet” (Mendelssohnt, Miss Jacobs; recitation, Miss Sowman ; song, “Songs of Araby,” Mr Chas. Thorpe; song, “Angels, Ever Bright and Fair,” : Miss I). Horne; violin solo, Miss Louisson> sung, “I Hear You Calling Me,” Mr A. G. Thivmpson; quartette, “Every Rustling Tree,” Messrs Thompson, Tavlor, Thorpe, and Short : “God Save the King.” Miss K. Fairhal! acted as accompanist. r . , . Captain H. E. Coombs, of the Salvation Army, lias interested herself in the cause of the distressed, family, aim wishes to thank those ladies who harp forwarded parcels of clothing* , 1S interesting to note that Captain Coombs, in order to devote her me to help the suffering poor, X3 B a leading position in a big Meltington drapery business at £6 a week. -t s she was’unable to go to the trout as a nurse, she adopted this course or coing her bit” for her country.
