STRICTURES ON LORD FRENCH

According to the DaMy Express, with the Cabinet’s approval, the Committee of Imperial -Defence has dismissed the Hon. J. . W. Fortescue from the position o* official historian in consequence of his strictures on Lord French in defence of General S'r H. Smith Dovrien. (Roc. Nov. 10, 9.15 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 7.
Professor Fortescue, ’ in a letter to the Moniing Rost, states that he only accepted*the position of official historian after much pressure. He twice pressed th e authorities to allow him to resign at the end of 1919. Thus was agreed to last August. He adds that. lie found Lord French’s book "so inaccurate that, he asked permission to ignore it in his official history* otherwise much' spac 0 would bo absorbed in correcting Lord French s statements. • The authorities agreed. Ho denies That, ho utilised official documents for his review. • If he had done s 0 he would have been better able to expose the full measure of Lord French’s inaccuracies. ?
