'• anniversary services Yesterday, the 73rd anniversary of' St. John’s • Methodist Sunday School was celebrated by special children’s services in St. John’s Church, morning, afternoon and evening.. There weid very large cblnigregations b/jth morning and afternoon, and in the evening the church, was packed to the doors and large numbers were unable to gain admittance. . The special feature of the day was the singing of th 6 children, who occupied platforms on each side of the pulpit leading from the choir gallery to the floor of the church and presented a very inspiring sight, tasteful decorations of the interior of the church by the lady teachers adding to ■'the * effect. The scholars had been specially trained by Mr A. P. Lucas, and they acquitted themselves admirably. even the smallest children knowing their .parts perfectly. The soloists were Mabel Miller, Rhoda Grigg, Enid Nock, Lily Forster, Iris Patchett, Lily Mason, Rena Stratford, Joyce Batchelor, V-olet Jeffreys, Gwen Eggleton, Nelsoh Bethwaite, Jack Kid- 1 son and Harold Cass. Miss Gladys Neale (organist , 0 f the Sunday School) presided at the organ! and M’*sa Flett’s orchestra assisted The morning service was conducted by-, Mr S. J. Mathieaon, and an address to the children was delivered by Mr G. W. Hughes, secretary to the National Council of. the In the afternoon Dr, Weeks, Dean of Nelson, addressed the children and the Rev. E. D: Pa.tchett was the. preacher at the evening service. The collect’ons during the day were in jfiid cf the Sunday School, and amounted ,to over £3O. . . The celebrations will > be continued 'this evening by a public meeting in the church, when the scholar’s will repeat a number of their special hymns.
