AFGHANISTAN

SITUATION GENERALLY SATIS-

FACTORY.

DEVELOPMENTS IN KURRAM,

vAustralian & N.Z Cable Association)

PESHAWAR-, May 20,

Khyber having ceased ‘to be -for the present a danger point, the situation has developed in Kurram. With the exception of a few outlaws the Tains and Waziris are firm in their resolve to permit no Afghans in their territory. Plans have already been made to secure Kurram against the Afghans threat. Nothing has happened beyond the sniping of pickets. A,t Pa.rachinar the stormy petrel Mullab Mir Sahib Jan Badshah, whom the troops called Jimmy Bradshaw, appealed to the. Bajaur, but was forced to leave. In 1915 he induced a combined force of Mohmands and Swatis to try to overthrow the Government, witn disastrous results. He receiuh visited the Mohmands, biu the latter were busy dividing the loot obtained at Dakka. and dismissed him. Frontier experts agree that except for a few outlaws tire tribesmen > will not welcome the passage of ill-disciplin-ed Afghan troops through their territory. "Only after many years’ experience have they acquiesced in tho presence of British troops. _ The tribal country does not trust Afghans, as the latter have no supplies, and are forced to exist on the country they are passing through. * ... The Amir’s stay in Kabul is exciting comment.. The army are demanding his presence at Jelaliabad. Official.—No further operation .is reported from Dakka. Yar Muhammad’s hand at Chora is believed to have been dispersed, and sniping has practically censed in-Khyber. The situation in Kurram is obscure. The Afghans picketing the _ Paiwar bridge .are adopting an aggressive attitude. firing on our pickets at night. Conditions are unsettled in Khost, General- Nad’r Khan is commanding. He is expected to arrive at Matnn on the 20th with detachments of regulars and tribal lascarsd

Reports from other parts are _ satisfactory. i The attitude of the tribes is good.
