HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEMES

AUCKLAND, April 30
Referring to hydro-electric schemes to-day, Sir William ' Fraser said that the Work of sinking experimental shafts on either side of the gorge in connection with the harnessing of the Waikato River was now in progress. Provided that the test proved Satisfactory, the construction of the darii would be proceeded with. It Was es--timated that a plant with a capacity of 152,000 horse-power ; could bW'ultimately installed at this station to fulfil its function. In the general scheme proposed By Mr Parity,. a plant Capdeity of 96,000 horse-power was required. Wbfk was akb prbgrfessiilg in connection with the Mangahao scheme, near Palmerston North, Which 1 wa s considered capable of developing 24,000 librse-pbwer and whksh Would j he' the other main sforth Island generating station. ' The Minister added that there Was no intention of proceeding with the Lake Waikaremoana scheme for some time. The cost of completing the Waikato and Mangahpo schemes was .estimated at between five and six million pounds.;;
