SUTER ART GALERY.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —As one of the many admirers of -the late Bishop after whom the Art Gallery is named) I am very eoxry to see the bad state of repair into which the building is rapidly falling, little or nothing having been done for some years owing to lack of funds. Neither can the committee purchase fresh pictures or in any way make the gallery more attractive owing to the same cause. It ie one of Nelson’s principal at:factions, and mapp pleasant hours are spent there by visitors to our fair city, but apart from its attractiveness it is the only memorial wo have of one who did so much for this city and district. A question I would ask is, Do we as ci-izens fully realise what an asset we possess in the Art Gallery? I think not, or we would not see it langTiishing for want of financial assistance. I understand .that the subscription to the Suter Art Society, who have the management of the Gallery, is 10s per annum. Surely, Sir, in a city of the size of Nelson, with the reputation thaf, it has in the world of art, it should not be a difficult matter to obtain enough subscribers t° etl * sure a sufficient income to keep the building in repair and enable the committee to purchase fresh pictures, and haven't. we some liberal-minded wealthy citizens who could endow it? And now that the war is over I am sure that if the matter is brought ‘o the notice of some of our energetic young people, they will willingly get ! up some entertainment in aid of its funds. I notice from an advertisement appearing in your valued paper that a meeting of the Suter Art Gallery is called for 3.30 next Friday afternoon for the annual election of officers and committee, and to make arrangements, for holding an exhibition of pictures. Although the time chosen may not be a convenient one for some of the subscribers, it is to be hoped that all will make an effort to be present and not leave i,t to jus;, a few. Tn conclusion I would say, ‘‘Wake up, fellow-citizens, and let us make the most of thi s valuable asset.” I am, etc., CITIZEN. Nelson, Jan, 23, 1919.
