A well-known settler,. Mr' Thomas Stephen Briggs Starnes, passed away, at “Mount Pleasant,’’ Lower Moutere this week. . Deceased was born at Lower Moutere 60 years ago, being a eon of the late Mr Stephen Starnes, one of the early pioneers. He had led; a yery active life, was. engaged in farming in Motueka for a considerable period and also at Lower Moutere to which place he removed some ten years ago.. He is survived by his wife and family of four sons and seven daughters. The latter are: Mesdarpes Williams (Gisborne), Flet cher (Wairoa ,H. 8,), W. Suckling and E, S, Wratt (Mbtueka), A. - Thorn (Lower Moutere). and Misses J. and D. Starnes, Bower Moutere, The eons are -Messrs Jack Starnes, Major F. Starnes, D.S.O. (on actice service)) George and Godfrey Starnes. ,

The death occurred on Saturday last at the residence of her eon-in-law, Mr Arthur StilweJ), .Motueka ,of Mrs Amy Budden, relict of the late Henry Budden, aged 70 years. Deceased) whoso husband predeceased her by seventeen years, was well-known and widely respected throughout the district, which had been her home for the past 29 years. Though Mrs Budden had Been in failing health for some.time, -the end cam© suddenly. . There are three sons and on© daughter left to mourn their loss, viz., Messrs U. H.t Budden (Mb* tueka), U. W.,, and L. G. Budden (Riwaka), and; Mrs Arthur StilwellfMotueka). The late Mr- Henry Budden, F.R.H.13.,' was in business in Wellington for some years as a horticulturist, _ prior to removing to the Nelson district.
