THE ELECTIONS

TROOPS POURING IN FROM THE WEST.

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association)

LONON, Jan. 18

The Daily' Express’ Berlin correspondent states that troops are pouring in from the Western front to secure freedom for Sunday’s elections.

MAJORITY SOCIALIST VICTORY PREDICTED. (Reuter’s Telegrams.) Jan. 19. The National Assembly elections were without- special incidents. There were immense crowds, including women, outside polling booths. Strong forces of Government troops occupied all important points, and patrolled Ihe streets. The voting was extremely heavy, ■both in Berlin and the provinces. Very few disturbances occurred. There were some arrests in Berlin because of Spartacusian attempts to destroy ballot boxes.

'Estimates of the results give the Majority Socialists 50 per cent of the seats, the Independent Socialists 5 per cent., the Centrists 50 per cent., and the Democrats 15 per cent, Ebert, in an interview, declared: “We will sign one peace based ou President Wilson’s fourteen points. W© will not agree ito a peace including any further demands. Germany was not alone responsible for the war. The Spartacusiane have been suppressed, ■but they may rise again soon if Germany fails to get plenty of food soon. As' the economic situation clears normal life will resume and internal troubles •will cease. It is a question of help from the Entente.”
