RED CROSS SPECIAL APPEAL.

A public meeting was held in the Council Chamber on Monday evening, to make arrangements for the Red Cross Special Appeal!, iMr J. Bredbury presiding. Ori the mot/ion of the chairman, all present formed themselves into the Special Appeal Committee, and it was unanimously decided to have a. RedCross Gala Day on the Show Grounds on 25th October. .

It was; decided f to request owners of motor cars, expresses, bicycle's, - prams, wheelbarrows, and .vehicles of all kinds', to decoi'ate their vehicles and take part in the procession, and. to assemble at the corner of Holtham and Fairfaxstreet at 11 a.m. and proceed to the gala grounds. A large ladies' sub-committee was appointed to arrange for the stalls, competitions, etc., and: also a strong sports committee was appointed to arrange the events for the, day; and to conc.ude with ft grand social at night. The Maypole dance will appear both on the gaLa grounds and at the social in the evening. - Art union tickets, Is each, will. admit the bearer , of same- to the grounds.' Six valuable prizes are being . donated for the art unlion prizes, and. with the Maypole dances, baby show, and the various competitions, . and the sports events, with fine weather, will make this gala day the best that has been held. ' *

RETURNED SOLDIERS. Corporals R. Thomson, and F. G. Blake returned home to Murchison on Saturday, just to visit their homes antl friends. They have .to report themselves at the 'Nelson/ . Hospital on - the 18th inst. Private J. Thomson, who has been home on. leave, has been notified to return to camp.
