"We made a successful raid north-west of Albert, in the neighbourhood' of Samel, and repulsed a raid north-eas; pf Bcthune.
AERIAL RAID ON COLOGNE
MUCH DAMAGE CAUSED

and caused much, damage-in the centre of the town. Fourteen people were ieilled and 40 injured. NATIONAL EXPENDITURE COMMITTEE. OVER-STAFFING AT WAR OFFICE. (Rec Ctfay 20, 1.50 p.m.) LONDON, May 19. The Commitfee on iNational Expenditure reports that the bread, subsidy costs £40,000,000 annually. It also exgresses dissatisfaction at the over-siaf-ng at the War Office, the staff whereof had increased; from 11& at the outeet of the war to 1516 last month. EXCHANGE OF WAR PRISONERS. BRITISH GOVERNMENTS ATTITUDE. (.Renter's Telegrams.) (Re. Mav 20. 1.5 P.nO " LONDON, May 19. > Lord. Newton, interviewed, replied 1 to criticisms of the Government's attitude on*he exchange of war prisoners. 'He said Britain was doing more for -war prisoners tha n any other Government. He mentioned that in addition to ordinary allowances the War Office "was spending £50,000 monthly for the relief of British prisoners in Turkey alone. He condemned the agitation for retaliating, which would not b» adopted except to secure improvement in the treatment of prisoners. The .
