Two, convents were struck. • It is calculated' that one-third of the houses have now been ruined. Obviously the Huns intend to destroy Venice's magnificent jewels of architecture.

The Vienna Zeit, discussing the possibility of 75«7,0QG Americans being sent to the Italian front in 1918, points out that Austria can provide only 200.000 mew troops. Th e Zeit emphasises the fact that the Entente hopelessly outclasses Austria in aerial warfare, is expected to dominate the operations and also the movement of the Austrian armies in the mouotainous country, ■whereas there is a network of railways behind, the Italians. In the House of Commons the Speaker read a message from His Majesty the Kin^' paying a tribute to the late General Sir Frederick Maude's services in Mesopotamia. His Majesty recommended 1 the House of Commons, as a recognition thereof, to grant Lady Maude .£25,000. The letter was loudly applauded*. The vote i 3 to be moved on Monday.
