NEWSPAPER PROPRIETORS ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Newspaper Proprietore' Association was opened in the Chamber of Commerce, Wellington, on Monday evening, and continued yesterday, says the Po;t. Berry (secretary). The president (Mr Selig) in his opening address referred to the war, and expressed the wish that peace wcThld be speedily brought about with honour to our colours. He reviewed the work of the association of the past year. He referred to the deaths of Mr Gothard, who represented the Westport Times; Mr Gardiner, of the Rotorua Chronicle ; Mr Lane, editor of the New Zealand Herald: Flight-Lieut. Leslie Brett, son of Mr Arthur Brett (Auckland Star); and Mr List, brother to Mr T. C List(Taranaki News). A resolution pi sympathy with the bereaved was carried byall standing. Mr Selig then referred at length to the matter of paper supplies and the difficulties confronting members in this connection. He also instanced the- strain newspaper offices were feeling, due to depleted staffs and the fact that the calling up of the Second Division is accentuating the position. • It was subsequently decided to wait upon the Prime Minister with a view to securing more r»aper by mail boats. At the "evening session of the conference, Mr George, "chairman of the Red Triangle appeal, with Mr national secretary, waited upon members to lay before them the urgent needs of the Y.M.C.A.. and to solicit the support of the newsoapers in the effort to make the Red Triangle appeal a successful one.
