DITCH DEBRIS IS ROAD METAL

"IMPROVING EMANO STREET BROKEN BOTTLES FOR ROADWAY A strong protest was made by Cr. Carlisle at last night's meeting in connection with material that is being put on the roadway in Emano street. This was being taken Trom the lower end of St. Vincent street ditch and composed gravel, tins, broken bottles and rubbish. In any case he had understood that the intention was that the stuff from the top end of the ditch should be placed in Emano street, not that material should be carted from the lower end right up to Emano street. The City Engineer said he was carrying out the instructions of the Council. He had never recommended putting material from the ditch on the streets. The stuff was picked over as well as it could be, but it was impossible to pick out all the glass, etc. Crs. Watson and Marris said they understood that/residents in the street were quite satisfied with the "metal," except for the broken which was dangerous to children and horses (no reference to bicygle tryes!}. The Council resolved that a man be sent to remove the glass. {Some years ago, following the repairing of a street with St. Vincent street ditch "metal," there were several cases of infectious disease in the vicinity, and rightly or wrongly, these were associated with the refuse placed on the street.)
