ENGINEER'S REPORT.
The City Engineer (Mr J. G. Littlejohn) reported : Streets and Footways.—The preparation of material for tarring- operations has been steadily proceeded with to the exclusion of all other work, except a little patching. I have made an inspection of the city, and would suggest as a programme for street tarring that such parts of the following streets as are in proper shape should b e proceeded with : Haven road, Bridge street, Collingwood street, Waimea street, VVaimea road, Washington Valley and -Lowrr . Hardy street. There will also be thfi usual top-dressing of footpaths and watertables where necessa'ry, and a few authorised works, such as Elliott streot watertables and kerbing for the Labour Department, footpaths Franklyn street and Grove street. It is important that the street surfaces should be done as early as possible in the season, but it would not be advisable to proceed if the weather is at all doubtful. J should like some assurance that the streets treated will not be opened up immediately Bhe work is completed. Miscellaneous. —I attended the Arbitration -Court as directed, and wa» granted exemption in the matter of th«.» { painters' dispute. j Five building permits for works valued at, £249 have been granted. Adopted. ABATTOIR REPORT. The Abattoir 'Manager (Mr G. W. Mitchell) reported that the-stock slaughtered during the fortnight comprised 42 cattle, 11 calves. 629 sheep, 44 lambs. 36 pigs ; total, 762.
