I was advised by the Harbour Board that the majority 01 tlieso cases were landed in bad condition, and .. asking if I would inspect same. I communicated with'the Department of Tn-. lernal Affairs, who in all probability have the correspondence in connection, with same, aiid with whom we deal in nil patriotic gift goods. An officer of that department and myself arranged to inspect the fruit, which was certainly iii a very bad' condition, contents being over-ripe, and running out of many 7, of the cases. This was on Friday. March 23rd and it was decided by internal Affairs and myself . that the fruit - was , not fit for consumption by the soldier*, and as the Harbour Board shed had to be cleared of the fruit. I had all cases turned over, and found only 13 fit to bo .. sent to camp (2 cases of cucumbers and II cases of tomatoes), which you duly , received. The balance of 144 cases the Internal Affairs official and myself decided to get aiquotation for irom various, V firms. The highest tender of 3d per rase was accepted, with the stipulation that thev had to be removed , immediately from the Board's shed. In due courso a cash payment for £5 8s was received by the officer of Internal Aif aits, a crc- . dit. to Camp Commandant, Featherston. This should have gone forward to you some weeks ago."
