FIFTY YEARS AGO
(From The Mail of 6th June, 1867.} We hear that a memorial is about to be presented by Mr Samuel Owens to the Provincial Council, asking for some recognition of the services rendered by hirn in the capture of the Maungatapu murders in June last., We have no wish to prejudice Mr 'Owens* claim in tins regard, but if the subject of remuneration for services rendered by the various individuals concerned in this affair be again made a matter of consideration by the Government, we would submit that; the claims of Constable IVlurpliy, who, it will be remembered, captured both Burgess and Ivellv, also receive the favourable consideration of -the Executive. His superior officers in the Police Force have already obtained the wellmerited recognition of their -services, and we can see no:reason why the claims of a subordinate should be altogether overiQoked.
