SUBMARINES
SPANISH STEAMER SHELLED. (Australian and N.Z. Oabl* Asaooiatioa.) MADRID, May 19. A submarine shelled the Spanish steamer Patriarch, killing the chief engineer. The crew abandoned the ship. The Cabinet is preparing a protest against the outrage. FRENCH LOSSES. LONDON, May 18. A French official message says: The shipping arrivals for the week numbered 952, and the sailings 991. There Wefe sunk three vessels over 1600 tons, arid none under 1600 tons. Four were unsuccessfully attacked. SUBMARINE SIGHTED OFF SAN DIEGO. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.} (Rec.
