Hanan (Minister of Education) stated that, owing to the. difficulties with which the Department was being faced in connection with this publication, it had meantime been decided not to make the appointment. 'Temporary urrair-iomeiits had, however, been made to carry on the work. In this connection the -Minister - said that the shortage in the supply of paper owing to the war was likely to affect the publication -of the journaL and it might become imperative to reduce the issue in order that stocks in hand might be conserved to ensure its continued publication* in even diminished numbers. "A :y such step," said the Minister, "I view with regret, for I recognise that the Journal has an educational value not possessed "by ordinary reading books. which cannot*provide up-to-date reading matter on important current events. \ndced, for this, among other reasons, the Journal is displacing miscellaneous read-, ers in many schools, and is thus relieving the parents of the cost of such books. That the School Journal is highly appreciated and eagerlv looked forward to by pupils in public schools I lenow from-"personal experience, and that its educational value is ■ widely recognised is shown bv the fact that the authorities of 200 private schools purchase it for the use of their pupils. In the country it reaches almost every home, and parents read Part 111. particularlv with as much interest as do '■■-■ their children. Not" least among its admirers are the children in Native schools.
