THE SHIPPING SHORTAGE
WARNING TO PRsODUCEKS. Sir James Allen published on Saturday, says the Dominion, the information. which has been known to everybody connected with shipping,for some days, that the Imperial.'.Government has commandeered for Imperial purposes four of the five ships in the trade ■between X<ew Zealand and the West Coast ports of America. The '.Minister also «ave a warning to shippers that „io view of the losses to our shipping hy the activities of suurcarines. and of the urgent need tor steamers for other trades in -which the vovage to England was not so long., it -was possible that we should have to put tip with fewer ships for the.carriage of our produce than we had lately had. Hte had received no'special advice which impelled him to jrive. this warning, but he considered, it the dubv of anyone in lus position to state clearlv that there was this possibility. He warned producers especially "of ."the dan-jer the?/- ran m piling up large quantities of perishable produce which they might never be able to get away from*this country.
