An unusual case of assault was heard in the Magistrate's Court in Christchurch last week. A cabdriver, 72 years .if age, was charged with throwing the contents of a tin of pepper in the eyes of a passenger, one of a party returning from the races. The pepper-throwing formed a novel and dramatic climax to an argument about the amount of the fare, accused claiming 12s 6d, but- getting "only 7s 6d and a punch in the chest." The magistrate said he would convict the accused, but, in view of his previous good character and great age, would treat him comparatively lightly. A fine of £5 and £1 17s costs was imposed.
