FARMERS' INCOME TAX

YIELD OF £249,048 FOR 1915. LITTLE TROUBLE EXPERIENCED. The following information was given in a return presented' to the House of Representatives on Saturday afternoon on the request of .Mr G. V. Pearce:— Amount collected wider farmers' income tax of 1915 249,048 Amount received fromi income tax payers of £SO and under 34,717 Amount received from income •tax payers of over £SO. ... 214,331 Total £249,048 When the report -was presented, Sir Joseph Ward said there had been verylittle trouble a'bout .getting from formers the information necessary for the assessment of .the farmers' income tax. There was not nearly -so 'miuch trouble as there was some years ago, when the incidence of taxation was altered, and the land and income taxes were substituted for the •property tax. This was due to the assistance given to farmers by the Taxing Department. The Department would in some -way assist taxpayers with the compilation of their excess profits returns for war tax purposes in- such a way that he did not anticipate ajiy trouble about the collection of the tax. He had received many communication;* fromi people who wanted directions, and he had sent replies, mostly by telegraph, to remove their difficulties. The Taxing Department had done very useful work in helping farmers with these returns, and would continue to do so in connection with the war tax.
