Shannon faired in yesterday's gale. Portions of the. roof of a new house were 'blown off and landed 120 yards away. The occupant removed his family and a little later the house was blown off the piles and collapsed. Many trees were Mown down and about 30. chimneys levelled.

The storm is abating, the rivers falling. No serious damage is reported. The rainfall was four and a-half inches for the 48 hours.

MANY DISTRICTS UNDER WATER

HASTINGS, This Day.

A trip round the district disclosed more damage than at first anticipated. A large area between Okowai and Omahu is under water. Settlers in this -district report loss of stock, one man losing 400 arid another 200 sheep. Lots of fencing was washed away. A regular torrent poured through the houses at Okawa, and one family was rescued) on horseback.

The whole of Pokowhai is under water, in fact the outlook from the railwav between Hastings and Napier is one big lake. Road traffic between the two towns is impossible. Fortunately the -river mouths are not blocked, otherwise there would have been a most disastrous flood.

HEAVY STORM AT DARGAVILLE.

DARGAVILLE, This Day

The heaviest storm for twenty years raged yesterday. The low-lying ground was flooded. Several buildings were threatened with collapse, but no serious damage is yet reported.
