MOUTERE FATALITY
THE INQUEST.
An inquest was held by the Coroner (Mr J. S. Evans S.M.) at Mbtueka yesterday, concerning the death of Francis Arthur Smith, \vlio was killed on blie Moutere-Motueka road on Tuesday even' ing. • The evidence was to the effect that Smith wa<s walking home from Motueka. oii Tuesday evening-, wheeling a bicycle. The mail car from Nelson to Motueka met him near the blacksmith's shop outside the boundary of Motueka' shortly before 6 o'clock. Smith Was in the middle of the road. The driver of the car saw him and turned, to his proper sido. Smith appeared to turn first to the right and then to the left, and, witnesses sail that he then lurch edi forward and fell in front of the car, which went over him.' It was stated in evidence that when Smith left Motueka he was under the influence of liquor. The cause of death was fracture of the base of iha skull.
A verdict was returned that deceased was killed as the ' result of a collision with a motor catr, and that no blame was attachable to the driver of the car.
