SHORTAGE OF WATER
DEPUTATION TO THE MAYOR
CARTAGE OF WA.TER ARRANGED -'■■■■ FOR.
The City Engineer and staff yesterday continued their investigations into the cause of the shortage of water in various parts of the city. Mr Littlejohn everywhere found the pressure to standi ,considerably below the usual reading,, falling away to nothing on the higher levels°of the Port Hills. In the "business portion of the city greater pressures were obtained from the large dam than from the upper weir, whereas the latter should give a greater pressure by abo it 601bs to the square inch than the dam. The weir was emptied last night .and the intake pipes were to be examined: t_>day to ascertain whether they have become obstructed hy debris brought down by the recent flood . ' Yesterdayi afternoon a deputation of residents on the Port Hills met tne Mayor at the City Conuei.l Chambers. The deputation explained the seriousness of the position, and asked that steps should be taken by the Council to de il with the emergency. The Mayor* stated that the City Council was doinsr everything possible to deal with the difficulty, but some time might elapse before the supply was fully restored. In the meantime, however, matters could not go on as they were, •C2d the Council would- have water carted to houses which had had their supply cut off. This would be instituted next dav and would be con,t>mie'd' as lon,-? ar the nrcesntv existed. The Upper' Weir will be shut off for a day or two. This will occasion a diminution of supply on high levels. j
