ADVANCE ON KOVEL FURTHER STRIKING PROGRESS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.'* (Rec. Aug. 2, 2.10 p.m.) PETROGiEtAD,- Aug. 1. As a result of Kaledin's great stroke on the Vladimir-Volynak road the advance towards Kovel is developing at great speed from the east south. Latest messages show that Russian in : faotry are within -20 miles of Kovel, •which is being: enveloped.' in a horse-shoe formation. The capture of Kovel wiH sever the junction of the Austrians and Germans. A: mostt significant thing is that the Germans seem to have accepted A definite severance of the Austrians. Their immediate concern is to save themselves, leaving the Austrians' to shift as best they can. The Russians' main pressure is now along the Thuria, -whereupon Kovel stands. It flows parallel to the Stokhod. The possibility of the Germans in the (Kovel region escaping is eagerly debated. Their loss of guns and equipment is bound to be heavy, and it is unlikely that the Germans will reach the Pinsk-Kobrin railway, except as a gravely.: disorganised mass, particularly as their marching powers are far inferior to the Russians. It is now evident that Rruissiloff kept the German centre in play. The Kovel region is only Blocked' by German mass attacks sufficiently successful not to discourage* them Teiriibrcing the centre -while the Russians are making process
on the flanks. Brussiloff is undertaking similar tactics on a 70-mile front from 3, Brody to Bxiczacz, -where Bothmer contyrnally sought to "break Brussiloff's centre. oßthmer also delayed the retreat at the last moment, remembering the disintegration which, followed Bothmer's retreats. ; '
