EASTERN EXTENSION CABLE
THE PROPOSED TRANSFER TO WELLINGTON.
The negotiations for the tv> reference of the Eastern Extension Company's cable from Wakaipuaka to Wellington are now well in hand, and a clause giving tho necessary power is included in the "Washing-up" Bill. The step is one of gi-eat importance for it means_ the closing, at some future date, of Wakapuaka as a cable station, says the Post. The change will involve the expenditure of a sum of money —-possibly in the vicinity of £70,000 —but it is thought that this will be commensurate with •the time saved in transmission. Mistakes in telegrams will also .be more easilv avoidccC and both the cable company and the Government should benefit by the scheme. It is only recently that the Pacific Ca.ble Company transferred. its cable into Auckland City, and the
! step has proved an advantageous one. | It is the intention of the Eastern Exi tension Company to divert the cable, ' landing it at Titahi Bay, near the en- ; trance to" the Porirua Harbour. It will • then be brought underground, fo Wellington, and it is possible that quarters will be found for the company ? s staff in the General Post Office. It may be . some time yet before the work is carried : out. but all the preliminai-y steps are . being taken.
