In -view of the rather alarming numiber of fires that have broken out of late in softgoods establishments ini Sydney (says -the Herald), the police have been led .to suspect incendiarism. This suspicion has been. strengthened by the fact that at one establishment —Mary Foy's, Limited—-a piece of cotton waste ; smelling of a well-known, highly iuflammable chemical, was found; amongst some fh : rta in the mercery department. This chemical can be dissolved in' liquid, and l when the liquid dries, if the chemical is .present ni sufficient quantity, the waste will of itself take fire. A second attempt was made to fir© a bulk store in another .part of the city iby breaking o■ window and' throwing irt a piece of waste saturated with the chemical.
