AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL AT THE FRONT
NEW ZEALANDERS SUCCESSFUL. LONDON, May 24. Special correspondents at the front send, long descriptive accounts of a treefelling competition on the 21st. Tho novelty o£ the idea caused them, to wax enthusiastic in describing the long procession of motor lorries conveying Erench, Australian, New Zealand, and Canadian partisans, and scores of competitors. General Sir William Birdwood, who was the animating spirit of the meeting, in presenting the prizes, emphasised, the physical and moral value of sportsmanship. The result was as follows: Tree felling (teams of three men): New Zealand, (including three maoris), 1, Australia 2. Log Chopping: Australia 1, New Zealand 2. Tn a best axeman's competition a Maori was first and a Canadian second.
