GERMAN ATTACKS NEAR YPRES
REPULSED BY THE BRITISH
A BRITISH OFFENSIVE
LONDON, May 9. Six' John French reports under date the 9th inst. : —"The enemy last night made attacks east of Ypres, which continued to-day. All vveTe repulsed with heavy loss.
"The British line is perfectly established. The British first army corps attacked the enemy on the 9th' between the Bo is Greuier and F'estubert, and gained ground to the south-east towards Fromelles. This fighting continues. "Our airmen successfully attacked St. Andre junction, north of Lille, and the canal bridge at Don, and also bombed Fournes, Herlies, Marquilles, and La Bassee.
AT HILL 60 GERMANS USE OF GAS. BRITISH BLINDED AND SUFFOCATED. DUNKIRK, May 10. Asphyxiating gases gave the Germana. an initial advantage at Hill 60. The British were blinded and suffocated,- but they held on as long as possible. Even with respirators the position was intolerable. When they sprang upon the paranets at the back of the trenches the German machine guns bpened fire, and many fell under the hail of bullets. The British had to run from the gases which then enshrouded the deserted hilltop.
POISONOUS GAS FUMES EFFECTS ON THE MEN. LONDON, May 7. The Press Bureau states that the Belgian Commission reports, that the Germans used nitrous vapours, and chlorine, sulphurous anhydrate,'and other undetermined gases. Tfie low-lying cloud caused was of a greenish," turning yellow, and rising" to a Height of 1(30 metres. Men were seized with vomiting and blood-spitting, eyes and mouths were made sore, and Mme were stricken with a' stupor lasting upwards of thiee hours. Germans: are experimenting with I the asphyxiation .of dogs at Hasselt, Belfiuni. " Thousands of respirators have eeri provided. Pi'idqntirs inform the ■ Commission that -immense quantities of gas bombs have Ibeen distributed along the trench front. The Commission thinks it only right to lay before the world's conscience the facts "of the new, premeditated cringe.
