i MR THOS. CAWTHEON'S INTENj TIONS. , The following letter from' Mr Thos. Cawthron, " was road at last night's meeting of the City Council: - .."Will you please allow and request the City Engineer to as soon, as "possible complete the survey of "a new "diversionof the road' to bo formed from the. southern end of Britannia -Heights roadway through" the western and-southern, sides of the Observatory block I have just acquired .from four different owners, for ,the;site of the Observatory, and to the -road. going about' east> recently surveyed . and laid, off-by your engineer-, to" the existing . roid over Bishopdale Hill? I venture, to-.ask for the above, to be done immediately, as it is desirable to obtain an exchange of the new road now asked to' be laid off for the roads intersecting the middle of • the' Observatory site before I can offer: to pay for the formation of a~ carnage drive from Washington Valley to Bishopdale via Britannia Heights and; the road now asked to be surveyed-, and which by the way I am assured will improve its scenic beauty." ■' . The Mayor explained that. Mr Cawthron had purchased, or was about to, 43 acres on top of the, Port "Hills .for the, Solar Observatory, and it was proposed bv the writer to make,, a road from Washington Valley along the Fort , Hills to the Observatory, and then goins along tho southern sideband eventually leading, on to Waimea Boad at Bishopdale, crossing the-.railway line by, 1 means of a bridge. Wherl completed, I said the Mayor, the Drive would be one , jof the finest in Nelson. Mr' Cawthron proposed to make the road for the bencfit of the town and of the Observatory. | Everything possible should be done i the Council to carry out the wishes . ot iMr Gawthron. If necessary an outI side surveyor should bo employed. On the motion of Cr Mercer, seconded by Cr Robertson, it was resolved to engage Mr Ledger conditionally on the work" being concluded in a fortmgh.t
