YEWS RETURNS NOT YET AVAILABLE. [VVTTMD P8833 A3SOCIATIOH.) AUCKLAND. April 13. The financial returns for the New Zealand railways for the year which ended March 31st are not yet available, but the Minister "for Railways (the Hon. W. H Herries) stated this evening- that it i=» estimated that the nett yield this year will be about £3 12s 6d per cent. The return for the year 1912-13 was £4 Os 9d per cent., which, with one exception, was the highest on record. It must be Lrne in mind, however, that the financial vear just closed did not contain an Easter p«riod, whereas the previous year fncluded two Easters. The traffic creditLi to the Auckland Exhibition, of course, helped the railways, but not, the. Minister states, to the extent anticipated bv the Department. On the other hand" the Maori epidemic aW the strike detrimentally affected the railway revenue during the past year to an appreciable degree, i urthermore, the increases in the pay of railway servants and other extra expenses incidental to the new regulations led to an al expenditure last year of son:e £BO,OOO.
