Mansfield, chief electoral officer of the Dominion, is now in Tasmania investigating, on behalf of the New Zealand Government, the operation of the proportional representation system eirployed for the State elections. Mr F Fish, manager of the* Bank of New Sonth Wales at Eketahuna, and formerlv of jtfasterton. has been appointed manager of the Bank's branch at Westport. . A Svdnev cable states that the ■ Hon Hen%r'Willis. Speaker of the New South Wales Assemblv. has arrived. He was well pleased at the cordiality of his re- ( ception in New Zealand. , Captain Baxter, an o'd and highly-re-spected resident of Coromandol. d:e<] at the Ccromandel Hospital on Friday last, at the ripe age of 85 years. In the early days he traded between New Zealand and Tasmania. Deceased had no relatives in the Dominion. All the Ministers are in Wellington to-day, with the/exception of Mr. F. M. B Fisher, who is on the West Coast, and the Hon. W. H. Herries, who is at Pahr-erston North. Mr. H. W. Capper, who has been Chief P6stmaster and Deputy Commissioner of Stamps at Timaru for the last five years, retired yesterday on superannuationl after 42 years' service. The Anglican Primate of Australia ! (Dr Wright, Archbishop of Sydney), accompanied bv Mrs Wright, will leave for England bv the R.M.S. Orvieto on February 12. "He will be absent about four months ,during which time the affairs of the dioceje will be administered by the Dean. It is just over three vears since; the Archbishop arrived in Sydney as successor to the late Dr. Saumarez Snuth. ' Arrivals at* Wellington by the Eemuera from London include the Rev. H. M. Rogers, curate of St. Paul's. Chicester; who proceeds to Auckland ; Mr. G. Gould, of Gould, Beaumont, arid Co., Christchurch; Dr. H. G. Rice, who is bound to Lyttelton; Mr. "W. G. Morrison,/of Wellington ; Sergeant-Major J. Cahill F. E. Ostler. P. M. Pretty, and .T. Wass, of the British Ar-iry Service Corps, who are to assist in organising a New Zealand Armv Service Corps; and the Rev. G. H. Mann, ex-president of the Primitive Methodist Church of New Zealand. who has been on a seven months' visit to the Old Country. The exodus from this (the Wellington Telegraph) office still continues. Mr. Bridces has just left them for fresh fields'and pastures new. He takes up an appointment with the United Wireless Company in Sydney. There are also several more impending departures, and it- is going to be a serious proposition o replace these" men with qualified operators. An office like this is not a fair ground for a young inexperienced officer" to graduate in. He should certainlv have a fair amount of experience gained from siraller offices before being asked" to grapple with o«r busy circuits. There are only one or two wires that could be called "good things." and then the chances are that you will be called uopn to man the pair of them, which creates certainly not an easy task. We are shortly to lose- a most populac and respected "comrad 3 in the person of Mr. Andrew M'Kenzie. Mr. M'Kenzie is to take charge of the Green Island office. He has been identified with us for such a considerable time that there will be a "vacant chair" noticeable for many a longv day.—"Katipo." ■ Last evening the Governor and Countess of Liverpool were the guests of the Wellington Club at a reception given in their honour.
