PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION
The annual meeting of the Stoke Pro gressiye Association was held on Friday/ evening, when there was a good at'tendance of members, tho president (Dr. .Andrew) being' in the ch'air. The" report of the corrmittoe showed 'that during the year the attention of the \ Associations had been largely engaged in 'the'matter of the purchase of land al :the head of Poor Man's Valley as a ■waterworks reserve, and the bepe was expressed that as a result of the efforts .made," the Wain/ca- 'County Council would in a short time, have effected the pur chase-of tho ...necessary land. The Association had also brought under the notice of the County Council the need: of a-,public cemetery for the district, and arrangements were practically completed for the purchase of a section of land fro~r ; Mr. Black. In response to representations from the Association, the Railway Department had provided convenience. s : at the 'Stoke railway station, and the Postal Department had arranged for an additional mail to leave Stoke at 5 p.m. on each day tha.t a. train runs to Nelson :n the evening, and' had also promised improverrent,to the receiving box at the Stoke Post ;-£)ffice. .-,■-' It was resolved, on the motion of Dr. Andrew, to place on record the members' appreciation of the work done ly the secretary (Mr. Vcysey) in- furthering } the interests of the Association.
A vote of thanks was accorded fo th<? Hall 'Committee for the use of the Hall in which to hold meetings. On the irotion of Mr. Robinson, the re-election of the officers and committee (Dr. Andrew president; .Mr. W. B. Con dell vice-president ; Mr. J. T. Veysev secretary and treasurer; Messrs A. P Allport a;nd G. Dee members of com |mittee), -was carried unanimously. .' The secretary was instructed to write .to the Waiin-ea, .County Council, drawing its attention to the disgraceful state ;of both ithe main road and the Rocksroad, from Stoke to the city boundary. It was decided that the committee should' go on with the erection of the fire'bell.'
; It was resolved that no meetings o the Association be held during December and January, unless it should Ik necessary to bring matters of iirportance before the members. ■
The meeting terminated with a \oi<of thanks to the chairman. ,
