. School committee. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The n-onthly meeting of the Riwaka School ■Committee was held in the schoolroom -on Tuesday evening. Present : .Messrs S. M. Askew (chairman), A. Duncan. T. -Cook* .1, Clarke, A. .McLean and W, W-. French. Tne headmaster, Riwaka, reported 108 ha.mes on the roll. Owing to the prevalence of mnirps and chicken pox, the attendance for the past month had suffered ; but was now improving. Miss Salmond had relinquished her duties on October 31st, and Miss Condell was acting -as locum tenens in her place. The Vl. Standard examination would take ■place at Motuektl oil November 8, seven nupils being entered fron:- Riwaka. "" The headmaster; Brooklyn, reported a roll number of 88. The attendance was satisfactory, the average being 80. Several children, however, -were still in the habit of staying away one day per week. A list of defaulters was handed in. Some of the school windows needed repairing, and a new broom, was requh' ed for school use. Correspondence was reatl from the secretary of the Education Board, as follows:- (!]. Enclosing examination reports oti ißiWaka and Brooklyn schools; (2) re iMiss Robinson's absence, and stating that a tcirporary probationer could not he supplied ; (3) re the appointment of Miss H. Black, and that she would commence her duties on January Ist., 1913; (4) re Miss Condell'.appointment as temporary teacher; (5) circular re the granting of school holidays. From Mr. Duncan (iMotuek;: •School Comrrittoe) re sending two mem hers to a conference to consider the appointment of truant officer. It was decided to have the broken win dows in the Brooklyn School repaired, and other necessary work done there., A long discussion, took place ias to" the best way of dealing, with the defaulters. It was ultimately agreed that notices b? sent to the parents. The examination reports on both schools were highly satisfactory, and the committee passed a resolution complirrentine the teachers on the excellent results at ■tained. Mr. Trevella (Brooklyn) and Mr. Irwin '(Riwaka) thanked' 'the committee for its kind appreciation of the work ai their respective schools. The}' had both worked under many difficulties during the year, and were pleased that .the reports were of such a satisfactory nature. Messrs French- and Clarke were ap pointed delegates to a meeting at Motueka- re the appointment of a truan' officer. It was decided to protest to the Boarc re the delay'in Miss Black taking up he? appoinfcirent. Two small accounts were passed foi payment, and the meeting terminated.
