UNION JACK

PROPOSAL BY WAifil BOItOUGH COUNCIL

LOYALTY A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT. (United Press Association.) WAIHI, November 8. The men, numbering about 250, coming off shift this afternoon, marched down the mine road into the main street. An open passage way was made for them, and as they passed along one section indulged in "boohing," while others cheered. At the bottom of the street the men mounted brakes, and were driven home. Hitherto the brakes drove on to the mine property, where the men embarked.

The Waihi Borough Council has issued the following circular, and resolution, and is posting same to the borough and county councils throughout the- Dominion :—'"l am directed to call your attention to the resolution passed at the meeting on the 31st ult., and to ask that your council discuss the question of passing one of a like nature. The council realises that in many quarters it may be considered far-fetched, and quite superfluous; but the trend of events at Waihi goes to prove what condition of things may arise where the doctrines of Socialism "and an adherence to the principles of the red flag find a footing unchecked in the communities. Where these are unknown it cannot be realised to what lengths the followers of the reu flag are prepared to go; but the incident of the tearing up of the Union Jack in the main street of Waihi may be quoted as an example, and I would urge that this matter receive the serious attention of your co'uncil, and point out that no one enjoying the inestimable advantage of living under the Union Jack should raise an" objection, except that on the point that his or her loyalty is apparently questioned, and the declaration may speak for itself. fSigned) H. D. Morpeth, Town Clerk." The resolution is : "That it be a condition of all future employment on borough works that each and every person employed by a borough council must sign a declaration affirming his or her loyalty to the King arid the Union Jack, and that none other than those affirming, their loyalty to the King and the flag shall be employed in any capacity on borough works, and that it be an instruction "to the Town Clerk to forward copies of this resolution to all local bodies throughout the Dominion, invit- | ing co-operation.-' ■•■•
